The Look Of Love

It´s sometimes funny that friends ask why I have stopped playing music or taking photographs. My reply, with a slightly confused look, is always “ I haven´t, why do you think that”? The usual reply is that they haven´t seen any posts of mine on social media.

It sometimes gets to me the immense pressure in the arts world to constantly show your work on these social media sites and be judged by the amount of likes you have. Surely the nice thing about these platforms is you have the world at your fingertips to listen, look at, like whatever you want… or even better…to see it in reality.

Anyway, back to the point (rant over). I was getting messages on my Youtube Music Channel asking why I don´t record tunes anymore, and although I have been playing a lot this year (recording and touring) I let the social media stuff slide…. but the amount of really nice comments recently has given me a new wave of energy to get going again. So thanks to all the guys who have supported these saxophone videos. I´m posting it on here because I also filmed it all myself, using Sony cameras and remotes. As usual, all edited using Logic Pro (audio) and FCPX (video).

Hope you like it , and there are lots more here !

Some of the gear used : Sony A7ii cameras Sony 50mm 1.8f lens, Sony 85mm 1.8f lens, Mac Book, Pro Logic Pro (audio editing), FCPX (video editing), AKG C3000B condenser microphone, Platinum Soprano Saxophone, Rico Jazz Mouthpiece, Rico Royal 2.5 reeds.

Russ Van den Berg’s Trip-Bop

A few weeks ago I got the pleasure of filming Russ’s new project , Trip-Bop. What a killing band! Really great writing from Russ and amazing playing from all the guys in the band. I wanted to put my camera down and get up and play. Russ has been getting back into Miles Davis from the 80´s fusion period, and you can really hear the influence in this new project. That’s not to say that this band doesn’t have its own sound ... quite the opposite! The collective of these 5 musicians really does bring a great , original feel and vibe to these new compositions. So here is a very short promo video of some of the moments from the gig. If you like what you hear, please let Russ know, or even better, buy the live album from his Band Camp page. All of this video was filmed using Sony alpha cameras , 50mm and 85mm lenses, and edited in FCPX.

SolMarket

Another quick post from a summer job at SolMarket, here in Valencia. This is the third year that this food festival has run and each year it gets bigger and better. Situated on the beach, loads of different food trucks, live music and artisan stalls. Really lovely place to spend an evening. Don´t miss it next year if you are around the Valencia area!

Lotus Loft Yoga Studio

One Sunday before summer I was down at Lotus Loft Yoga Studio , Valencia, for a photography session with Irene who runs the loft, and 4 of their teachers. Its a small, warm and friendly studio offering various styles of classes both in Spanish and English. Rather than trying to explain everything they offer, go over and check out their website and show some support! We had great fun and I was super happy with the results...even if I did walk away feeling very unfit and guilty about not being able to touch my toes! Well here comes the geeky photographer bit. All these shots where made using Sony Alpha mirrorless cameras, with 35mm and 50mm sony lenses. I also used studio lights and Godox flash. All edited in Capture One software.

To have a chance to win a free photo session, all you have to do is guess all the places shown in the video (write them in the comments here or on Youtube) and share the video on a social network. I´ll announce the winner at the end of the month!

New Project: 4 steps

While we were out the other day, Emma had the idea of trying to get some more movement into some of my shots. So we started messing about on the beach and actually came up with some pretty fun photographs. This got me thinking about movement , the stages of movement from start to finish, and how we very rarely see the in-between. These 4 shots below show the motion of water from start to finish... we usually only see the water just before it hits you in the face due to some child swimming past kicking their feet at 200bpm. The photographs work as a group of 4, more than individual shots. I was really pleased how they came out.

So the idea is that over the next month I´ve set a goal to try and capture more of these moments within this format. 4 complementing shots that show a process from start to finish, hopefully showing something that is usually to fast to normally be seen. Hope you like them, and please let me know if you have any ideas for a subject that would work well in this format.

The George Lacson Project @ La Casa De La Mar

It was really great to catch up with George last night! We met a few years ago here in Valencia where we became friends, and ended up playing some gigs together. George is a monster bassist!  Ultimate groove! So after moving back to the states a few years ago he has now returned with his band, The George Lacson Project, for a Spanish tour.

George Lacson - Bass / Cinnamon Denise - Vocals / Cliff Gordon - Tenor Sax, E.W.I and Vocals / Federico Zanetti - Keys / Kowan Turner - Drums

Last nights gig was at a place called La Casa De La Mar. A great place, with loads of stuff going on... Music, Surf School, Skate ramp, yoga, the list goes on. The guys sounded amazing and I would definatly go and check them out if you can. They are playing tonight at Las Arenas Hotel in Valencia Port. And Sunday at The Playground Art Centre.

Im going to upload some video of the gig last night too, but in the meantime , here are a few shots from the gig.

Update: A quick vid I put together from the very few clips I got. Sorry about the sound quailty, it´s straight from the camera and so is pretty distorted. Go and check out their real recordings to feel the full soul !!

Café Del Duende

Hi again! Heres a really quick post from last night at Café Del Duende . If you don´t know this place, it´s a must see in Valencia. Its been so long since I´ve been here I feel pretty silly not to be going more often. Absolutely fantastic Flamenco Bar , with live music Thursday to Sunday. It gets packed quick, and then they have to turn people away unfortunately, so get down there early! We went down with my Mum and Dad who even ended up dancing at the end of the night! Brilliant! Great performance from Isabel Julve, Júlia Gimeno and Kike Naval.

So from a photography point of view this was really really hard. No flash allowed, very little lighting, and the back stage was covered in hanging LED lights. I did the best I could with an 85mm 1.8. (And a steady hand) Hope you like the shots, let me know what you think. Thanks.
