Fantastic Negrito & KOLARS @ 16 Toneladas

This was one we wont forget! Two brilliant groups I would definitely check out if you get the chance!! Im not going to get into reviewing the bands, as I don´t think I would do them justice, I just wanted to share some shots ( Ill put some video up too when I get the chance). KOLARS describe their music as “ Desert Disco, Space Blues and Glamabilly “. Sooooooo good! Love them!

Fantastic Negrito has had a long career , and for a time left the music business. He´s back with force in the last few years, winning a Grammy in 2017 for Best Contemporary Blues Album. He describes his sound as “ black roots music for everyone” … brilliant !! If anyone says blues is dead, they obviously haven´t heard this guy! If you went to the gig, or any other gigs of theirs, let me know what you thought!

Ahhhh, almost forgot! The venue, 16 Toneladas ! Top place in Valencia, with the best sound, for the public and on stage as a musician! Really worth checking out gigs there.

The Look Of Love

It´s sometimes funny that friends ask why I have stopped playing music or taking photographs. My reply, with a slightly confused look, is always “ I haven´t, why do you think that”? The usual reply is that they haven´t seen any posts of mine on social media.

It sometimes gets to me the immense pressure in the arts world to constantly show your work on these social media sites and be judged by the amount of likes you have. Surely the nice thing about these platforms is you have the world at your fingertips to listen, look at, like whatever you want… or even better…to see it in reality.

Anyway, back to the point (rant over). I was getting messages on my Youtube Music Channel asking why I don´t record tunes anymore, and although I have been playing a lot this year (recording and touring) I let the social media stuff slide…. but the amount of really nice comments recently has given me a new wave of energy to get going again. So thanks to all the guys who have supported these saxophone videos. I´m posting it on here because I also filmed it all myself, using Sony cameras and remotes. As usual, all edited using Logic Pro (audio) and FCPX (video).

Hope you like it , and there are lots more here !

Some of the gear used : Sony A7ii cameras Sony 50mm 1.8f lens, Sony 85mm 1.8f lens, Mac Book, Pro Logic Pro (audio editing), FCPX (video editing), AKG C3000B condenser microphone, Platinum Soprano Saxophone, Rico Jazz Mouthpiece, Rico Royal 2.5 reeds.

The George Lacson Project @ La Casa De La Mar

It was really great to catch up with George last night! We met a few years ago here in Valencia where we became friends, and ended up playing some gigs together. George is a monster bassist!  Ultimate groove! So after moving back to the states a few years ago he has now returned with his band, The George Lacson Project, for a Spanish tour.

George Lacson - Bass / Cinnamon Denise - Vocals / Cliff Gordon - Tenor Sax, E.W.I and Vocals / Federico Zanetti - Keys / Kowan Turner - Drums

Last nights gig was at a place called La Casa De La Mar. A great place, with loads of stuff going on... Music, Surf School, Skate ramp, yoga, the list goes on. The guys sounded amazing and I would definatly go and check them out if you can. They are playing tonight at Las Arenas Hotel in Valencia Port. And Sunday at The Playground Art Centre.

Im going to upload some video of the gig last night too, but in the meantime , here are a few shots from the gig.

Update: A quick vid I put together from the very few clips I got. Sorry about the sound quailty, it´s straight from the camera and so is pretty distorted. Go and check out their real recordings to feel the full soul !!

Sylvie Leys - Saxophonist

This last weekend I had the pleasure of being able to photograph Sylvie Leys. A French Saxophonist studying here in Valencia , at Berklee College of Music. We had only met once before, however knowing that we both share a love for the saxophone meant that we kind of had a head start on the idea of photography and things to talk about when doing the shoot. The day I get a shoot where the people want to talk about football is going to be a tricky one.

Sylvie is super relaxed, which makes things a lot easier, and the only real main idea was that we wanted to get a warm sunny feel to the shots. Normally this would be easy in Valencia, but I think I have lost count of the number of times we had to reschedule due to rainy, cloudy grey days. So the sun was out, everything great... until I held Sylvie´s sax while she got up onto a wall for some more shots. I got a huge wave of Saxophone envy!! Selmer balanced action tenor. I need that saxophone!!

You can check out some of Sylvie´s new music here . She also told me about some plans to record new material with a fellow Berklee student, Saxophone and Marimba . Cant wait to hear it!

Urban Valencia

Hi again! Heres a video Pedro Wessels put together for me, to one of my tunes off an E.P. I released a year ago called "Things To Come" . Most of you guys who know me , know Im a Saxophonist... I really like this video as it shows a lot about the city I live in, and think Pedro got the feel of my music really well! Hope you like it, you can check out the rest of the E.P. here

Demoh

Demoh

My first quick first post! Welcome to the new site , hope you like it. Was out and about with Demoh (Devin Malloy) this weekend. Devin is an incredible musician from the U.S.A who is over here working in Spain and will be coming out on Disrupción Records this year! At the moment based at Berklee College of Music, expect big things from him this year! Loads of original music , not too into putting labels on things but if I had to , his sound moves around rap/ jazz feels.

In a couple of weeks I´ll be putting down the camera and picking up the sax to do some gigs with him here in Valencia. Stop by if you are close and say hi!

Thanks for the support.
